Congratulations to Elon University’s SPARKS! Peer Educators and their advisor, Jordan Perry!
Elon University’s SPARKS! Peer Educators were honored at the regional Bacchus Network conference in April 2012 in Virginia. The SPARKS! received the “Outstanding Affiliate Award” which is designed to recognize peer education groups for both the quality and quantity of work they have completed over the past academic year. The honorees are selected by an awards committee and receive a plaque to recognize their achievements.
The SPARKS Peer Educators are a team of student leaders who provide health promotion programming and serve the Elon University campus community as health resources. Topics addressed by SPARKS include self-esteem and body image, alcohol and other drug education, smoking cessation, nutrition, sexual assault, sexual health, and stress management. SPARKS Peer Educators invite students to think critically about these and other health issues by planning and hosting events, facilitating classroom discussions, and disseminating sound health information.
The BACCHUS Network was until recently known as the BACCHUS and GAMMA Peer Network. BACCHUS was once an acronym for Boosting Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students. GAMMA was the abbreviation for Greeks Advocating for Mature Management of Alcohol. Greek refers to members of collegiate social fraternities and sororities.
